How to Plan for Bridesmen and Groomswomen

How to Plan for Bridesmen and Groomswomen

Traditionally, a groom chooses a combination of men to form his bridal party and a bride chooses her sisters or closest girlfriends to create her bridal party. However, more and more couples are bucking that tradition and mixing their wedding parties. Grooms-to-be are choosing close friends who are girls to round out their bridal party, while brides-to-be want their close guy friends to stand by their side on the big day. Gone are the days where bridal parties must be gender specific. If you are planning to have bridesmen and groomswomen, that’s great, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Treat Everyone Equally for Wedding Events

If you are having groomswomen and bridesmen for your wedding, it is important that you treat everyone equally. You might think that having your male childhood best friend at your bridal shower is awkward, but it’s important not to exclude him if he is part of the bridal party. Sure, bridesmen might opt to back out of the women-only event, but they’ll appreciate being asked. Likewise, ensure that everyone is invited to the bachelorette and bachelor parties, respectively, and all of the pre-wedding activities. To keep things running smoothly, plan a few combined bridal party outings so everyone can bond!

Consider Attire

When planning for bridesmen and groomswomen, you also need to consider bridal party attire. You don’t have to require everyone wear the exact same thing, but it’s important to have patterns, shades, and fabrics that will match whether someone is wearing a dress or suit. Using larger retailers will ensure that colors translate across attire, but you can also just select a color palette to work from that everyone in the bridal party adheres to when selecting their outfit.

Determine Lineup for Photos

Something else that you’ll want to consider is how everyone will be lining up for photos. Are you going to have all of the women on one side and men on the other side? Or, are you going to have everyone standing up on the bride’s side on the left and those standing up with the groom on the right? You might prefer one look better than the other, so be sure to talk it over with your fiancé in advance to determine the right setup for you. For photos, you can also mix and match and take a few of each and then decide after the fact!

Choose Gender Neutral Bridal Party Gifts

When you’re selecting bridal party gifts to thank everyone for standing by your side on the big day, it’s a good idea to select a gender-neutral gift. That way no one will feel left out and you won’t stress over hurt feelings!
